Aberdeen, Mississippi – Rising river levels are creating ongoing flood concerns near Aberdeen as the Buttahatchie River is expected to spill out of its banks and remain above flood stage for several days.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the Buttahatchie River near Aberdeen through Thursday morning. Minor flooding is forecast as the river continues to rise, with water levels expected to exceed flood stage this evening and crest early Monday afternoon.
At last check Sunday afternoon, the river stage stood at 11 feet. Forecasters expect the Buttahatchie River to climb to a crest near 15.5 feet, well above the flood stage of 13 feet. At 15 feet, water begins covering portions of Air Base Road on the west bank of the river, and low-lying farmland in the area is already taking on water.
Emergency officials warn that roads near the river may become impassable, especially overnight and during the early morning hours. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways, as water depth can be difficult to judge and conditions can change quickly.
River levels are forecast to slowly fall after the Monday crest, dropping back below flood stage early Thursday morning. Residents near the river should continue monitoring conditions and remain alert for additional updates or changes to the flood forecast as water levels fluctuate.
