Rochester, New York – A prolonged and intense winter storm continued to hammer western and north-central New York Sunday afternoon, with lake-enhanced snow creating dangerous travel conditions expected to last well into the new week.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect across much of western New York, with some areas under warning through early Tuesday morning. Snowfall totals of 12 to 18 inches are expected in Monroe, Wayne, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, with the highest amounts focused along the Lake Ontario shoreline and areas southeast of the lake. Portions of Niagara, Orleans, Erie, Genesee, and the Southern Tier are also forecast to see widespread totals between 9 and 18 inches.
Snowfall has been heavy at times across Rochester, Oswego, Watertown, Buffalo, and surrounding communities, rapidly covering roads and reducing visibility. Lake-enhanced bands are expected to persist tonight, with moderate to heavy snow continuing Monday, especially from Wayne County east through Oswego County. Travel during both the Monday morning and evening commutes could become very difficult, particularly on lake-adjacent roadways and higher terrain.
Transportation officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel and allow extra time if driving is unavoidable. Slippery roads, sudden whiteouts, and drifting snow remain ongoing concerns.
Snow is expected to gradually ease late Monday night into early Tuesday, but hazardous travel conditions may linger even after snowfall tapers. Warnings remain in effect, and additional statements are likely as lake-effect snow bands continue to shift.
