Dallas, Texas – Ice could turn deadly tonight across a broad swath of the South as a powerful winter storm spreads freezing rain from Texas into the Tennessee Valley, creating dangerous travel conditions and a growing risk of widespread power outages.

According to the National Weather Service Aviation Weather Center, a long-duration icing event is underway across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley, with freezing rain rates high enough in some areas to produce more than a half inch of ice. That amount is capable of downing trees, snapping power lines, and making roads nearly impassable in a matter of hours.

North and central Texas are already seeing deteriorating conditions, with the threat expanding into Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and parts of the southern Appalachians. Major corridors including I-20, I-30, I-40, and I-44 are expected to see rapidly worsening travel tonight as ice builds on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Emergency officials warn that ice storms are among the deadliest winter weather events due to crashes, falling limbs, and prolonged exposure during power outages. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, prepare for extended loss of electricity, and have multiple ways to stay warm safely.

Conditions should slowly improve from west to east late tonight into Sunday, but the storm will continue pushing northeast. Additional warnings and advisories remain likely as this high-impact ice event unfolds across nearly a dozen states.
