Grand Rapids, Michigan – Bitter cold tightening its grip on Michigan is raising concerns along rivers across the state, where thickening ice could trigger dangerous ice jams through the weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the prolonged stretch of unusually cold temperatures is accelerating ice growth on rivers, especially in spots where open water still exists. Forecasters say this cold pattern is rare for West Michigan and could cause ice jams in areas that do not typically experience them.

Ice jams can force water levels to rise rapidly and unpredictably, increasing the risk of flooding near riverbanks. Counties across West and Central Michigan, including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, and Kalamazoo, are being urged to stay alert. Low-lying roads, riverfront properties, and parks are especially vulnerable if ice shifts or stacks up.

Emergency managers warn residents living or working near rivers to prepare now. Clearing snow from drains, securing outdoor items, and staying aware of river conditions can reduce risk. People are also advised to keep a safe distance from frozen rivers, as ice thickness can vary widely.

While a modest warmup is possible early next week, forecasters say the overall cold pattern will persist, keeping river ice locked in place. Additional statements or warnings could be issued if conditions worsen. River level updates are available through NOAA, and officials urge residents to monitor conditions closely through the weekend.
