Kansas City, Missouri – Snow continuing through Sunday morning combined with dangerously cold wind chills is creating hazardous travel and exposure conditions across the Kansas City area through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, snow has spread across the region and is expected to continue through today and into Sunday morning. Storm-total snowfall accumulations are now trending lower, with 2 to 6 inches expected across the metro area. Despite the reduced totals, forecasters warn that travel impacts remain likely today and Sunday due to persistent snowfall and bitter cold.
The National Weather Service reports that an Arctic air mass will remain in place through the weekend, bringing dangerously low wind chills. Minimum wind chill values in Kansas City are forecast to range from around −8 to −14 degrees at times through Sunday, with subzero readings continuing into early next week. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through noon today.
Forecasters emphasize that cold, not snowfall alone, is the primary hazard. Snow-covered and icy roads may remain slick even after snowfall rates decrease, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Reduced visibility and blowing snow may further complicate travel during heavier snow bands.
Below-normal temperatures are expected to persist through next week, limiting snowmelt and prolonging icy conditions. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, allow extra time for essential trips, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles in case of delays or breakdowns.
Those most vulnerable include older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals without reliable heating. Students and young workers commuting early Sunday may face the most severe wind chills during morning hours.
The National Weather Service advises residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and monitor updates as winter conditions continue across the region.
