Washington, District of Columbia – A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to the Washington area beginning late tonight, with widespread accumulations likely through Sunday before a changeover to sleet.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, most of the region, including Washington, DC, is forecast to receive between 5 and 10 inches of snow from late tonight through Sunday morning. Snowfall is expected to become heavy at times overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions by early Sunday.
Forecasters say snowfall amounts could vary depending on the exact track of the storm. Areas north and west of Washington may see higher totals, while parts of southern Maryland and central Virginia could receive less snow due to mixing with sleet later Sunday morning into the afternoon.
The National Weather Service warns that if the storm tracks slightly farther north, warmer air aloft could lead to increased sleet or freezing rain, especially south of DC and Baltimore. A farther south track would support colder air and higher snowfall totals closer to the coast.
Snow is expected to be most intense late tonight through early Sunday, when roads may quickly become snow-covered and impassable. Conditions may improve briefly Sunday afternoon as precipitation transitions, but additional snow and ice impacts could linger into early Monday.
Residents are urged to complete preparations as soon as possible, including limiting travel, charging electronic devices, and preparing for potential power outages. Even small shifts in storm track could significantly affect local impacts.
Commuters, essential workers, and students traveling early Sunday may face the most dangerous conditions, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces.
The National Weather Service advises residents to closely monitor updates overnight as snowfall rates increase and the storm evolves.
