Milwaukee, Wisconsin – A surge of Arctic air delivered dangerous cold across southeast Wisconsin early Saturday, forcing residents to contend with life-threatening wind chills before conditions slowly ease later this morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. CST for Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Green Lake, Marquette, Dodge, Ozaukee, and Washington counties. Wind chills during the pre-dawn hours dropped between 31 and 35 below zero, levels capable of causing frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. A Cold Weather Advisory follows from 6 a.m. through noon CST as wind chills remain near 30 below.

Communities including Fond du Lac, Sheboygan Falls, West Bend, Beaver Dam, Hartford, Grafton, Germantown, Plymouth, and Cedarburg are all impacted during the morning hours. Travel outdoors, even for short periods, carries risk without proper cold-weather gear, especially for commuters, outdoor workers, and those waiting at bus stops.

Emergency officials urge residents to dress in multiple layers, fully cover exposed skin, and use caution when traveling outside. The intense cold can also affect vehicles and outdoor infrastructure, increasing the risk of breakdowns or frozen components.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve toward midday as winds ease, but officials caution that cold temperatures will persist. Residents are advised to remain alert for updated statements, as additional cold-related advisories could be issued if wind chills remain dangerously low.
