Lubbock, Texas – Bitter Arctic air continues to lock down West Texas, keeping dangerous cold in place across the South Plains and Rolling Plains as residents face multiple days of life-threatening wind chills.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon CST Monday for much of the South Plains, Rolling Plains, and the far southern Texas Panhandle. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 15 below zero through Sunday morning, with even colder values near 20 below possible by Monday morning.
The warning includes Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, Brownfield, Littlefield, Muleshoe, Tahoka, Childress, Denver City, Floydada, Crosbyton, and Spur, along with dozens of surrounding communities. Prolonged freezing temperatures are raising concerns about ruptured water pipes, stressed heating systems, and dangerous conditions for anyone exposed outdoors for extended periods.
Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outside, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Pets should be kept indoors, and livestock need access to warm shelter and unfrozen water. Fire officials also stress safe use of space heaters and warn never to run generators or grills indoors.
The extreme cold is expected to persist into Monday morning before slowly easing later in the day. Officials warn additional cold-related advisories may follow if conditions fail to improve.
