Little Rock, Arkansas – A rare and prolonged blast of Arctic air is settling across Arkansas, bringing days of dangerous cold that could threaten lives, homes, and infrastructure well into next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, an Extreme Cold Warning has been extended and is now in effect until noon CST Tuesday for nearly the entire state. Wind chills are expected to range from 10 to 20 below zero at times, conditions capable of causing frostbite and hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
The warning spans central, northern, eastern, western, and southern Arkansas, impacting major population centers including Little Rock, North Little Rock, Conway, Hot Springs, Pine Bluff, Russellville, Mountain Home, Batesville, Harrison, Camden, Monticello, and Fort Smith–area communities. Higher elevations across the Ozarks and Ouachitas are expected to feel the harshest cold, while prolonged freezing temperatures statewide raise concerns about ruptured water pipes and strained heating systems.
Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin. Homeowners are advised to drip faucets, wrap exposed pipes, and ensure pets and livestock have warm shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Fire officials also warn against improper use of space heaters, generators, or grills indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
The extreme cold is expected to linger through early Tuesday before gradual improvement. Officials caution that additional advisories may be issued as the cold pattern holds, and residents should remain alert for updated warnings and safety guidance.
