Chadron, Nebraska – Bitter Arctic air tightened its grip on western Nebraska early Saturday, placing Dawes County under an Extreme Cold Warning as wind chills plunged to life-threatening levels before sunrise. Residents in and around Chadron woke up to conditions capable of causing frostbite in minutes, prompting urgent safety concerns for anyone outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon MST Saturday, with wind chills dropping as low as 35 below zero across Dawes County. Officials warned that exposed skin could develop frostbite in as little as 10 minutes, especially during the early morning hours when winds are strongest.
The cold is impacting the entire county, including Chadron State Park and surrounding rural areas, where limited shelter and longer response times increase risk. Local agencies are urging residents to delay non-essential travel, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and check on neighbors who may lack adequate heating. Schools, ranch operations, and outdoor work schedules may also see disruptions as the cold lingers through late morning.
Emergency managers recommend dressing in multiple layers, covering exposed skin with hats, face masks, and gloves, and keeping pets indoors as much as possible. Warming centers may be utilized if conditions worsen.
The warning is expected to expire around midday Saturday, but officials caution that dangerously cold temperatures may persist beyond that time. Additional advisories could be issued if winds remain elevated or temperatures fail to recover.
