New Orleans, Louisiana – A dangerous bout of freezing rain could develop across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi late Saturday night, raising concerns for slick roads, icy bridges, and hazardous travel through much of Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday afternoon for areas including East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, East Feliciana, St. Helena, Washington, Livingston, and Tangipahoa parishes, along with nearby counties in southern Mississippi. The primary threat is freezing rain, which can coat roadways and elevated surfaces with ice even when accumulations appear minor.
Communities such as Baton Rouge, Denham Springs, Gonzales, Plaquemine, Clinton, Franklinton, Bogalusa, Amite, Kentwood, and McComb could see road conditions deteriorate rapidly overnight if temperatures drop below freezing while rain is falling. Bridges and overpasses are especially vulnerable and may become icy before surrounding roads.
Officials warn that even a thin glaze of ice can lead to spin-outs, crashes, and difficult travel conditions. Sidewalks, parking lots, and stairs could also become dangerously slick by early Sunday morning. Residents are urged to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary travel during icy periods, and closely monitor forecast updates.
The winter storm watch signals increasing confidence in impactful icing, though exact amounts and timing are still being refined. Warnings or advisories may be issued as the event draws closer. Travelers and residents across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions through Sunday afternoon.
