Yakutat, Alaska – Dense freezing fog is creating dangerous travel conditions across the City and Borough of Yakutat early Saturday, sharply reducing visibility and increasing the risk of icy surfaces on roads and walkways.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect through midday Saturday as visibility drops to a quarter mile or less at times. The fog is dense enough to significantly limit sight distance for drivers, especially along coastal roads, airport access routes, and less-traveled surfaces where ice may be harder to detect.
The combination of freezing temperatures and persistent fog is allowing moisture to freeze on contact, leading to slick pavement, icy sidewalks, and hazardous conditions for both vehicles and pedestrians. Morning travel is expected to be especially challenging, with rapidly changing visibility and hidden ice posing a threat even at low speeds.
Local officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra distance between vehicles. Pedestrians should also use caution, as untreated walkways and steps may be icy and difficult to see under foggy conditions.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late in the morning as fog begins to thin. Until then, hazardous travel is likely to continue, and residents are encouraged to delay non-essential trips until visibility improves. Additional advisories may be issued if dense fog persists longer than expected.
