Buffalo, New York – A prolonged winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions across much of western and central New York beginning late Saturday night and continuing through Monday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, Winter Storm Warnings take effect early Sunday for much of the region, including Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Jamestown, Olean, and Batavia. Snowfall will intensify overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, becoming widespread and persistent through Monday. Most areas are expected to receive 8 to 14 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts possible where lake enhancement develops.
Communities south and east of Lake Erie, including Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, and southern Erie counties, are likely to see steady heavy snow that will significantly reduce visibility at times. Farther north, including Niagara and northern Erie counties, snowfall ramps up Sunday morning and continues through Monday evening, making travel difficult for an extended period.
The greatest totals may occur east of Lake Ontario. According to the National Weather Service, Wayne County and northern Cayuga County could see 12 to 18 inches of snow due to lake-enhanced bands, affecting areas near Newark, Fair Haven, and surrounding rural roads.
Major routes including I-90, I-190, I-290, U.S. 20, and Route 104 are expected to become snow-covered and slick, especially during heavier snowfall rates. Officials urge drivers to delay unnecessary travel and prepare for slow, hazardous conditions that could impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through Monday night, with additional updates expected as the event unfolds.
