Missouri feels brutally cold as daylight breaks across the metro.
Light snow drifts through sharp air. Wind stings exposed skin. Roads look passable now, but that window is closing fast.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning across the Kansas City region. Wind chills have dropped as low as 20 below zero, creating a serious frostbite risk. As the day progresses, cold becomes only part of the story.
A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas, beginning late tonight and lasting through Sunday evening. Snow develops early and intensifies through the day. Widespread accumulations of 4 to 9 inches are expected, with the highest totals south of the I-70 corridor.
Travel conditions will deteriorate quickly. Major routes including I-70, I-35, I-435, and Highway 71 may become snow-covered and slick. Visibility drops during heavier snowfall bands, especially Sunday morning. Plan extra time if travel is unavoidable and carry winter emergency supplies.
Temperatures remain locked well below normal. Highs Sunday reach only the upper teens. Gusty winds drive wind chills back into the negative single digits. Any brief melting during daylight will flash freeze after sunset, increasing crash risk on untreated roads and sidewalks.
By Monday, skies clear but the cold lingers. Sunshine offers little relief, with highs near 19 degrees. Overnight lows dip back near zero. Pipes, pets, and vulnerable neighbors remain at risk during the prolonged freeze.
Looking ahead to midweek, temperatures slowly recover into the 30s. Snow chances taper off, but cold air remains dominant across the central Plains.
Conditions may worsen rapidly after dark tonight. Limit travel when possible and layer up before heading outside. Are you already seeing heavier snow where you are?
