Virginia — Cold air bites early, and clouds hang low over the New River Valley. What looks quiet now will not stay that way. A developing winter storm is poised to change conditions quickly across southwest Virginia.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Blacksburg area from this afternoon through Monday afternoon. Snow begins to spread in later today, mixing with sleet by evening. Roads cool fast under the Arctic air, allowing snow to stick quickly.

By tonight, snowfall becomes heavier at times. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow and sleet, with ice accumulations up to four-tenths of an inch. Gusty winds add stress to trees and power lines. Power outages are possible as ice builds.

Sunday brings the most dangerous stretch. Snow transitions to freezing rain and sleet during the day. Bridges and overpasses turn slick first. Travel may become nearly impossible, especially on secondary roads and mountain routes.

Conditions deteriorate further after dark. Freezing rain lingers into Sunday night, while temperatures remain well below freezing. Plan to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. If you must drive, carry winter survival supplies.

Monday starts cold and hazardous. Snow tapers early, but flash freezing becomes a major concern. Melted snow refreezes quickly, leaving hidden ice on sidewalks and untreated roads. The Monday morning commute is likely impacted.

Looking ahead, bitter cold lingers into midweek. Highs struggle to reach the mid-20s, and overnight lows drop near zero. Precipitation chances fall after Monday, but winter remains firmly in control.
