West Virginia – Snowflakes drift through biting air this morning, coating sidewalks and dulling the shine on parked cars. The calm feel outside won’t last. A significant Winter Weather Alert is unfolding now across central and southern West Virginia, with conditions expected to deteriorate quickly into Sunday and Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Charleston area through early Monday. Mixed precipitation develops today, with snow, sleet, and freezing rain all possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches are expected, along with ice buildup near two-tenths of an inch. That combination raises concerns for slick roads, downed trees, and scattered power outages.

Snow becomes heavier Sunday, especially during the afternoon and evening. Visibility drops during stronger bands, and untreated roads turn slushy, then icy. Travel along I-64, I-77, and Route 119 may become hazardous. Plan extra time if travel is unavoidable. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly after sunset.

By Sunday night into Monday, lingering snow showers continue as colder air deepens. Highs struggle to reach the lower 20s Monday, allowing melted snow to refreeze. Flash freezing becomes a real threat on bridges and secondary roads, increasing crash risks during the Monday commute.

Residents should prepare now. Keep emergency kits stocked with food, water, and flashlights. Charge devices and limit travel when snow intensifies. Dress in layers and protect exposed skin from the cold.

Looking ahead, colder-than-normal temperatures linger into midweek. While snowfall tapers Tuesday, icy mornings remain likely. Longer-range outlooks suggest below-normal temperatures continuing, even as precipitation chances decrease later next week.

Stay alert as updates continue.
