New York – The cold bites hard this morning, stinging cheeks within minutes and frosting windshields across central New York. Snow already dusts side streets, and the quiet feel outside won’t last long as a powerful winter storm locks in through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning with wind chills plunging 15 to 25 below zero. A Winter Storm Warning begins Sunday morning and continues through Monday evening for much of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania, including the Binghamton area. Snow totals of 12 to 18 inches are expected, with snowfall rates exceeding two inches per hour at times.

Snow spreads in quickly Sunday morning and intensifies through the afternoon and evening. Visibility drops sharply during heavier bands, especially near I-81, Route 17, and secondary roads. Gusty winds may cause blowing and drifting snow, making travel difficult to impossible at times.

Conditions worsen Sunday night into Monday as heavy snow continues. The Monday morning and evening commutes are expected to be heavily impacted. Plows may struggle to keep roads clear, and compacted snow will turn icy. Flash freezing remains a serious concern as temperatures stay locked below freezing.

Residents should finish preparations now. Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm window. Charge devices, stock food and medications, and keep vehicles fueled. Dress in layers and limit time outdoors due to the extreme cold. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Snow tapers late Monday, but cold air lingers into midweek. Wind chills remain dangerous early Tuesday. Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook points to below-normal temperatures continuing, with drier weather developing toward Wednesday.

More advisories or updates are likely as the storm evolves.
