South Carolina – Cold rain beads on windshields this morning, but the feel in the air is changing fast. Temperatures hover near a critical line, and conditions are setting up for ice to form quickly across the Midlands.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from this afternoon through Monday. Freezing rain is expected to develop tonight and continue into Sunday, with ice accumulations of one-tenth to three-tenths of an inch possible in and around Columbia. Even light ice can create dangerous travel and power issues across central South Carolina.
Early readings sit in the mid-40s, but colder air presses south through the day. Rain transitions to freezing rain as temperatures fall below 32 degrees late tonight. Elevated surfaces freeze first, followed by untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Gusty northeast winds may worsen the impact by stressing ice-covered trees and power lines.
Drivers should prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions along I-26, I-20, and secondary roads. Flash freezing is a major concern as rain freezes on contact, leaving black ice where pavement appears wet. Travel may become hazardous Sunday into early Monday, especially during peak driving hours.
Residents are urged to finish preparations early. Avoid unnecessary travel once icing begins. Charge phones, gather flashlights, and plan for possible power outages. Keep food, water, and medications ready. If travel is unavoidable, slow down and allow extra distance between vehicles.
Conditions gradually improve Monday afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing. Lingering slick spots may remain into Monday night. Colder air returns midweek, but precipitation chances drop by Wednesday.
Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
