Virginia – Cold wind sweeps in off the Atlantic this morning, rattling signs and pushing raw air across Hampton Roads. Pavement looks dry for now, but that changes fast as wintry precipitation moves in and temperatures hover near freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect early, followed by a Winter Storm Warning beginning this afternoon and continuing through Sunday evening. Snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 3 inches are expected across coastal Virginia, including Virginia Beach, with a light glaze of ice possible inland before precipitation changes to rain.
Temperatures start in the upper 20s and low 30s, keeping conditions primed for slick roads. Snow and sleet develop later today, becoming steadier into the evening. Gusty northeast winds may reach 35 mph, lowering visibility and blowing snow across bridges and exposed roadways.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly along I-64, Route 58, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Even minor accumulations can create major problems in coastal areas, especially on untreated roads. Flash freezing remains a concern as melting refreezes after dark, leaving black ice in hard-to-see spots.
Residents should plan ahead. Limit travel during periods of snow and sleet. Charge devices, secure loose outdoor items, and allow extra time if heading out. Keep blankets and emergency supplies in vehicles in case of delays.
Precipitation tapers late Sunday as temperatures rise, but wet roads may refreeze overnight. Monday brings gradual improvement, though breezy and chilly conditions linger. Colder-than-normal temperatures continue into midweek, with quieter weather expected by Wednesday.
Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
