Georgia – Cold rain taps rooftops early, but a sharper danger is forming just above the pavement. Temperatures hover near freezing, and by later today, liquid rain turns into a coating of ice that clings to roads, trees, and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from this afternoon through Monday morning. Ice accumulations between one-quarter and one inch are possible across parts of north and central Georgia, including the Atlanta metro. Travel may become nearly impossible where icing is heaviest, and power outages are likely.

Morning temperatures sit in the upper 30s and low 40s, but colder air presses in quickly. Rain transitions to freezing rain late today and continues into Sunday. Elevated surfaces freeze first, followed by untreated roads and bridges. Winds increase at times, adding stress to ice-laden trees and power lines.

Major routes including I-75, I-85, I-20, and the Downtown Connector could become slick with little warning. Flash freezing is a major concern as temperatures fall after rainfall, creating black ice even where pavement looks wet.

Residents should finish preparations early. Avoid unnecessary travel once icing begins. Charge phones, gather flashlights, and plan for possible power loss. If driving is unavoidable, keep extra food, water, and blankets in your vehicle.

Conditions gradually improve Monday as temperatures rise above freezing, though lingering slick spots may remain early. Colder air returns midweek, but precipitation chances drop heading toward Wednesday.

Additional weather alerts may be issued as the storm evolves.
