Kansas City, Missouri – A significant winter storm is expected to impact much of the Heartland beginning Sunday night, bringing heavy snow, dangerous ice, and extreme cold that could disrupt travel, utilities, and daily life across several central states through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will spread across Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois late Sunday, with periods of heavy snowfall continuing into Monday. Arctic air following closely behind the system is expected to push temperatures well below normal, creating life-threatening wind chills and increasing the risk of frostbite during overnight hours.

Major transportation routes including Interstates 70, 35, 29, and 80 could become snow-packed and icy, especially during peak commute times. Central and northern Missouri, eastern Kansas, and much of Nebraska face the potential for significant snow accumulation, while portions of southern Missouri and Illinois could see sleet or freezing rain capable of downing tree limbs and causing scattered power outages.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy snow, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and protect pipes, pets, and vulnerable populations from prolonged cold. Power crews and road departments are preparing for extended response operations.

Winter storm warnings and cold weather advisories are expected to remain in effect into Tuesday, with additional alerts possible as the system strengthens across the Heartland.
