Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A powerful winter storm is set to impact much of the Mid-Atlantic beginning Sunday night, bringing heavy snow, dangerous cold, and the risk of ice that could significantly disrupt travel and daily life across multiple states through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, snow is expected to spread across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia late Sunday, with periods of heavy snowfall continuing into Monday. Arctic air will follow closely behind the system, sending temperatures sharply lower and creating hazardous wind chills, particularly overnight and during the morning commute.
Interstates including I-95, I-76, I-83, and I-81 could become snow-covered and icy, especially during peak travel times. Interior Pennsylvania and West Virginia face the potential for the highest snow totals, while parts of southern Maryland and Virginia could see a mix of sleet or freezing rain that raises the risk for power outages and downed tree limbs.
Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible school delays, and ensure heating systems are operating safely. Cold temperatures may become life-threatening for those without adequate shelter.
Winter warnings are expected to remain in effect into Tuesday, with additional advisories possible as conditions evolve across the region.
