San Angelo, Texas – A prolonged stretch of bitter cold is set to grip west central Texas this weekend, with dangerously low wind chills expected to arrive Saturday evening and linger into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from 6 PM Saturday until noon CST Monday for much of west central Texas. Wind chills are expected to drop to between zero and 10 degrees below zero, posing a serious risk of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone exposed without proper protection.

The warning includes Tom Green, Taylor, Brown, Coleman, Callahan, Nolan, Fisher, Runnels, Sterling, Irion, Concho, Menard, Kimble, Mason, San Saba, McCulloch, Crockett, Schleicher, Sutton, and Throckmorton counties. Cities impacted include San Angelo, Abilene, Brownwood, Sweetwater, Ballinger, Coleman, Brady, Junction, Sonora, Ozona, Eldorado, Menard, Mason, San Saba, Winters, and Sterling City.

Officials warn that extended freezing temperatures could lead to ruptured water pipes and place added strain on heating systems. Residents are urged to wrap exposed plumbing, bring pets indoors, and check on elderly neighbors. Outdoor activities should be limited, especially overnight and during early morning hours.

The Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect from 6 PM Saturday through noon Monday, and additional advisories may be issued if temperatures fall further or cold conditions persist longer than expected.
