Duluth, Minnesota – Life-threatening cold continues across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with wind chills plunging as low as 45 degrees below zero through midday Saturday, followed by another round of dangerous cold lasting into Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon Saturday for much of northeastern and north-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. A Cold Weather Advisory then takes over from 6 PM Saturday until noon Sunday, extending the risk of frostbite and hypothermia across the region.
In Minnesota, the warning and advisory cover St. Louis, Itasca, Cass, Aitkin, Pine, Crow Wing, Cook, Lake, Carlton, and Koochiching counties, including Duluth, Hibbing, Ely, Brainerd, International Falls, Grand Rapids, Two Harbors, and Hinckley. Wind chills as low as 45 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
In northwest Wisconsin, Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Sawyer, Washburn, Burnett, and Price counties remain under the same timeline, with wind chills dropping to 43 below zero. Superior, Hayward, Ashland, Hurley, and the Apostle Islands are all impacted.
Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers with face protection, keep pets indoors, and safely use heating sources. Checks on elderly neighbors are strongly encouraged.
Cold-related advisories remain in effect through noon Sunday, and additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
