Dodge City, Kansas – Residents across southwest Kansas are being urged to take precautions as dangerously cold wind chills settle into the region through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, wind chills as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero are possible from early Saturday morning through Sunday morning, with the cold persisting into midday Sunday. Actual air temperatures will remain bitterly cold, while strong winds will significantly increase the risk of frostbite.

Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur in as little as 10 to 15 minutes on exposed skin during the coldest periods. Overnight lows combined with sustained winds will make conditions especially hazardous for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

The cold will impact the entire region, including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, and surrounding communities. Officials recommend limiting time outdoors, wearing multiple layers, and ensuring that hands, face, and ears are fully covered.

Residents are also advised to protect pets and livestock, ensure adequate shelter and unfrozen water sources, and prepare winter survival kits for vehicles in case of emergencies.

The coldest wind chills are expected during the early morning hours Saturday and Sunday, with gradual improvement later Sunday afternoon.
