Crockett, Texas – A dangerous ice storm is expected to grip East Texas beginning early Saturday, raising serious concerns for power outages, falling trees, and nearly impossible travel through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston and Galveston, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday for Houston, Trinity, Polk, Madison, Walker, and San Jacinto counties. Ice accumulations between two-tenths and one-half of an inch are expected, with additional sleet accumulation possible. Even small increases in ice could significantly worsen conditions.
Statewide impacts will center on infrastructure and mobility. Ice buildup on trees and power lines is likely to cause scattered to widespread power outages, especially in rural areas. Roads are expected to deteriorate rapidly, with bridges and overpasses icing first. TxDOT officials warn that travel could become nearly impossible along major routes including U.S. 287, U.S. 190, State Highway 19, and Interstate 45 north of Conroe.
In communities such as Huntsville, Crockett, Livingston, Madisonville, Trinity, Groveton, Corrigan, Shepherd, and Coldspring, residents are urged to prepare for extended outages and avoid all non-essential travel. Charging electronic devices, securing alternate heat sources, and keeping food and water on hand is strongly advised.
The Ice Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories or extensions are possible if icing intensifies. Residents should monitor local alerts closely and check road conditions by calling 511 before attempting any travel.
