San Antonio, Texas – Hazardous winter conditions are expected to spread across South Central Texas beginning Saturday evening, bringing ice-covered roads and dangerously cold temperatures that could make travel nearly impossible through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin and San Antonio, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday for areas south of Interstate 10 and east of Interstate 37, including Bexar, Guadalupe, Atascosa, Wilson, Karnes, Gonzales, De Witt, and Lavaca counties. Ice accumulations between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch are expected, enough to create widespread hazards on untreated roads.
Statewide impacts will extend beyond travel. Bridges and overpasses are expected to ice over quickly, increasing the risk of crashes across major routes such as I-10, I-37, U.S. 90, and Loop 1604. Emergency officials also warn that extreme cold settling in Saturday night through Monday morning could become life-threatening, damage unprotected pipes, and put livestock at risk.
Within the San Antonio metro and surrounding communities including Seguin, Floresville, Pleasanton, Karnes City, Gonzales, Cuero, and Hallettsville, residents are urged to delay all non-essential travel. Preparations should include charging electronic devices, protecting exposed plumbing, and ensuring access to adequate heat.
The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday midday, but cold conditions will linger into early next week. Residents should continue monitoring local alerts and check road conditions at DriveTexas.org or by calling 800-452-9292 before traveling.
