Chicago, Illinois – Dangerous cold conditions are impacting the Chicago region Friday, with accumulating snow and hazardous travel expected late Saturday into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, the harshest cold is occurring Friday morning, particularly northwest of Interstate 55. Wind chills ranging from -30 to -40 degrees are expected in those areas, with wind chills of -20 to -30 degrees southeast of I-55. Officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

The National Weather Service says the worst cold conditions should ease by midday Friday, though subzero wind chills may redevelop tonight in some locations near the Wisconsin state line. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, bring pets indoors, and check on elderly or vulnerable individuals.

Looking ahead, a prolonged period of accumulating, dry and fluffy snow is expected to develop late Saturday afternoon and continue into Sunday. Forecasters say the bulk of snowfall is likely late Saturday night through midday Sunday.

While uncertainty remains on how far northwest the snow will reach, the greatest chances for accumulating snow and travel impacts are expected near and east of I-55. The highest snowfall totals are currently forecast well south of Interstate 80, with lake-enhanced snow potentially boosting totals closer to Lake Michigan.

The National Weather Service warns that snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and hazardous travel conditions are possible from Saturday night through Sunday. Frigid temperatures are expected to persist into early next week, potentially prolonging winter weather impacts.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecast updates and prepare now for both extreme cold and weekend travel disruptions.
