Aberdeen, SD – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across central, north-central and northeast South Dakota and portions of west-central Minnesota through 3 p.m. CST Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters said wind chills early Friday dropped to 50 degrees below zero, creating life-threatening conditions. At those levels, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, and prolonged exposure significantly increases the risk of hypothermia.
Areas under the warning include Aberdeen, Watertown, Mobridge, Sisseton, Milbank, Webster, Redfield, Ipswich, Gettysburg, Miller and Ortonville, along with surrounding rural communities.
The National Weather Service urged residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers including hats, gloves and face coverings, and use caution while traveling. Officials also advised keeping pets indoors and ensuring livestock have adequate shelter, food and unfrozen water.
Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and family members and to use space heaters safely. Authorities warned against using grills or generators indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Friday as wind chills rise above extreme warning thresholds.
