Green Bay, WI – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across much of central, north-central and northeast Wisconsin as dangerously cold Arctic air continues to grip the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said wind chills early Friday dropped to 40 to 45 degrees below zero, with isolated locations briefly approaching 50 below. Daytime wind chills Friday are expected to improve slightly but will remain hazardous, ranging from 20 to 30 below zero, before plunging again overnight into Saturday morning.

The warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST Saturday.

Counties affected include Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Lincoln, Langlade, Marathon, Portage, Wood, Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Calumet, Manitowoc, Door, Oconto, Marinette, Shawano, Waupaca, Waushara and Kewaunee, among others. Cities under the warning include Green Bay, Appleton, Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Rhinelander, Eagle River, Oshkosh and Manitowoc.

The National Weather Service warned that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, with prolonged exposure increasing the risk of hypothermia. Officials urged residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers including hats, gloves and face coverings, and keep pets indoors.

Drivers are advised to use caution when traveling and to prepare for vehicle emergencies. Residents are also encouraged to protect plumbing by insulating pipes or allowing faucets to drip to prevent freezing.
