Grand Rapids, Michigan – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday for portions of southwest and west-central Michigan, where lake effect snow is causing hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, additional snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are possible near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Periods of falling and blowing snow are producing very poor visibility, especially within more persistent lake effect bands.

The advisory covers areas including Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, Ludington, Fremont, South Haven, and surrounding communities. Roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, are expected to remain slick and hazardous throughout the day.

Forecasters warn that visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances as lake effect snow bands shift. Drivers may encounter near-whiteout conditions in heavier bands, followed by improved conditions just a few miles away.

The hazardous weather is expected to impact both the Friday morning and evening commutes. Untreated roads may remain snow-covered, especially in rural areas and near the lakeshore.

Residents are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling. Officials emphasize the importance of being prepared for sudden changes in visibility and traction, particularly on north–south roadways.

Motorists should allow extra travel time, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and road conditions before heading out.

Communities across west Michigan should remain alert for continued lake effect snow impacts through the evening hours.
