Watertown, New York – Travel across northern New York is already treacherous Friday as intense lake-effect snow continues to hammer the Eastern Lake Ontario region, piling deep snow onto roads and sharply reducing visibility during the morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Friday evening for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties. The most persistent lake-effect bands are targeting the Tug Hill Plateau, where an additional 8 to 16 inches of snow is expected before snow eases later today. Winds gusting up to 40 mph are producing blowing and drifting snow, creating near whiteout conditions at times.
Roads across Jefferson and Lewis counties, including stretches of Interstate 81, Route 12, and Route 177, are becoming snow-covered and difficult to navigate. Travel may become very difficult, especially in open and elevated areas where visibility can drop rapidly with little warning.
In addition to the ongoing warning, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Saturday night through Monday evening as another round of heavy snow becomes increasingly likely across the same areas. Residents are urged to complete necessary travel early, secure supplies, and prepare for prolonged winter conditions.
Drivers should consider delaying non-essential travel and closely monitor road conditions through local transportation agencies. Additional advisories and warnings are expected as the next storm system approaches early next week.
