Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Travel across Oklahoma could become extremely dangerous beginning Friday morning as a powerful winter storm spreads heavy snow, sleet, ice, and bitter cold across nearly the entire state, with impacts lasting through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from Friday morning through Sunday midday for most of Oklahoma and parts of northern Texas. Northern and central Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, Enid, Stillwater, Norman, and Ponca City, are likely to receive 8 inches or more of snow. Southern Oklahoma and nearby areas of north Texas may see up to 1 to 2 inches of sleet along with a glaze of ice reaching two-tenths of an inch.

Strong winds gusting up to 35 mph Friday could create areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility, especially across open highways. Dangerous wind chills are expected Friday night through Sunday morning, increasing the risk of frostbite for anyone stranded outdoors. Major corridors including I-35, I-40, I-44, and U.S. 75 are expected to become snow-packed and slick, with conditions worsening overnight.

State officials urge residents to remain indoors if possible, delay all non-essential travel, and prepare emergency kits in case of power disruptions or road closures. Road conditions can be checked through Oklahoma’s road information system or TxDOT in north Texas. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through Sunday, and additional advisories may follow as conditions deteriorate.
