Greenville, North Carolina – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for parts of eastern North Carolina as freezing rain and minor snow or sleet could create hazardous travel conditions this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, ice accumulation is the primary concern, particularly across inland eastern North Carolina. Forecast ice totals range from 0.10 to 0.25 inches, with locally higher amounts possible near and west of Greenville, Kinston, Williamston, and Washington. Confidence is high that the greatest impacts will come from freezing rain rather than snow.

Snow and sleet are becoming less likely overall, but light accumulations remain possible, especially along and north of U.S. 64, where forecast uncertainty remains highest. Any snow or sleet amounts are expected to be minor but could worsen travel conditions if combined with ice.

The leading edge of freezing rain is expected to develop Saturday afternoon, with impacts continuing into Saturday night and early Sunday. No additional ice accumulation is expected after Sunday afternoon, though lingering cold temperatures may allow slick spots to persist.

The National Weather Service warns that bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could quickly become icy. Isolated power outages and tree damage are also possible if ice accumulations increase.

Cold air behind the system will push temperatures well below normal early next week, increasing the risk of refreezing and prolonging impacts even after precipitation ends.

Commuters, students, and weekend travelers across Greenville, New Bern, Jacksonville, and surrounding communities should prepare for dangerous travel windows and closely monitor forecast updates, as small temperature changes could significantly alter impacts.
