New York, New York – A major winter storm could bring widespread heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions to the New York City metro area and surrounding states late this weekend into early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon for southeast New York, northeast New Jersey, and southern Connecticut. Forecasters say snowfall totals of six to twelve inches are possible across the region, with some areas potentially exceeding a foot. Snow may mix with sleet or freezing rain Sunday night, especially closer to the coast.
Snow is expected to overspread the area late Saturday night and intensify Sunday, with periods of heavy snowfall capable of reducing visibility below one-quarter mile. Roads are likely to become slick and hazardous, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Travel impacts could be significant from Sunday through the Monday commute.
Areas included in the watch span New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Bergen, Essex, Union, Passaic counties in New Jersey, and Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties in Connecticut. Major routes such as Interstate 95, Interstate 80, the Long Island Expressway, the Cross Bronx Expressway, and Garden State Parkway could see dangerous driving conditions.
Officials urge residents to prepare now by reviewing travel plans, winterizing vehicles, and stocking emergency supplies. Non-essential travel should be delayed once snowfall begins.
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Monday afternoon, and warnings are expected as confidence in snowfall totals and impacts increases.
