Hazard, Kentucky – Heavy snow and a dangerous mix of sleet and freezing rain are set to blanket much of Eastern Kentucky starting early Saturday, with impacts lasting into Monday morning. Travel could become nearly impossible, especially along and north of KY Route 80 and the Hal Rogers Parkway, where up to 12 inches of snow is expected.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday through 7 a.m. Monday for counties spanning from Fleming to Pike. Areas south of the Parkway could still see 3 to 7 inches of snow, but face greater ice risk—up to four-tenths of an inch—raising the potential for power outages and tree damage.

Communities including Hazard, London, Pikeville, and Somerset should brace for multiple hazards across the weekend, with conditions expected to deteriorate quickly Saturday afternoon. Power companies are urging residents to prepare now by charging devices, stocking emergency supplies, and avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary.

Road conditions will remain hazardous into the Monday morning commute. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued depending on how the storm evolves through Sunday night.
