Evansville, IN – A powerful winter storm is expected to shut down parts of southwest Indiana with up to 13 inches of snow between Friday night and Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 1 a.m. Friday and lasts through 7 p.m. Sunday, covering Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick, and surrounding counties. The Evansville metro area is in the storm’s direct path, where snowfall rates may exceed an inch per hour on Saturday.

Roads across I-69, US-41, and local state highways could become impassable by midday Saturday. Strong bursts of snow combined with wind chills near zero will make for dangerous travel and increase the risk of roadside emergencies.

The NWS warns that sleet could mix in across southern counties Saturday afternoon, lowering snow totals slightly but increasing icing risk. Power lines and tree limbs may become coated in ice, leading to scattered outages.

Hoosiers should prepare now by charging devices, stocking food, and avoiding weekend travel if possible. Winter alerts remain in effect until Sunday evening, and updates will follow as the system evolves.
