I-64 near Charleston, West Virginia – Travel along Interstate 64 and surrounding roadways could become extremely hazardous this weekend as a major winter storm brings heavy snow and widespread impacts to central West Virginia.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the entire forecast area from late Friday night through Sunday. Forecasters report high confidence in a significant, high-impact winter storm capable of disrupting travel across the region.
Probability maps show a 60–80% chance of at least 6 inches of snow for much of the Charleston area, with localized higher totals possible. The Weather Service also indicates an 80% to near 100% chance of moderate winter storm impacts, along with a 40–60% chance of major impacts, including extremely difficult or impossible driving conditions.
Interstates I-64, I-77, and I-79, as well as secondary roads, are expected to see snow-covered pavement, reduced visibility, and periods of near-whiteout conditions during heavier snowfall. Areas south and west of Charleston may experience some mixing with sleet or freezing rain, but snow is expected to remain the dominant hazard for most travelers.
The storm is expected to intensify Saturday, with the most severe travel conditions developing Saturday night into Sunday, when snowfall rates may overwhelm road treatment efforts. Cold air following the storm could allow icy conditions to persist into early next week.
Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel, particularly overnight and during peak storm periods. Those who must travel should prepare for delays, road closures, and rapidly changing conditions.
Commuters, students, and weekend travelers using I-64 through the Kanawha Valley should plan for significant disruptions.
