Across eastern New York, winter conditions are lining up for a prolonged stretch of snow, sharp cold, and slick travel that intensifies through the weekend and spills into early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures remain locked below freezing while several rounds of snow develop. Light snow showers linger at times today, followed by colder air pressing in Friday night. Daytime highs struggle through the teens and 20s, while overnight lows fall into the single digits and even below zero.
In Albany and the Capital Region, the most impactful snow arrives late Saturday into Sunday. Snow chances increase sharply Sunday, with accumulating snow likely through the day and into Sunday night. Roads may turn snow-covered quickly, especially during heavier bursts. Gusty winds will lower visibility at times, particularly on open stretches of I-90, I-87, and secondary roads.
Cold air behind the snow creates an added hazard. Any snow that partially melts during daylight hours may refreeze rapidly after sunset. Flash freezing could leave sidewalks, parking lots, and untreated roads icy with little warning. Drivers and pedestrians should slow down and plan extra time.
The cold lingers into Monday with additional snow chances early. Even as snowfall tapers, the chill holds firm, keeping surfaces icy and travel conditions tricky. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit unnecessary travel during snow, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles.
Looking farther out, precipitation chances rise again next week as colder-than-normal air remains in place across much of the Northeast. More advisories may follow as patterns sharpen.
