Old Forge, New York – Travel conditions across the western Adirondacks are expected to worsen sharply later today as lake effect snow intensifies, creating snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility across Hamilton and northern Herkimer counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Thursday afternoon, with an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 35 mph. Conditions will deteriorate further by mid-afternoon as a Lake Effect Snow Warning takes effect through Friday evening. Snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible north of Route 28 in Herkimer County.

Communities including Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Big Moose, Long Lake, and McKeever are likely to see periods of heavy snow as scattered snow showers consolidate into a persistent lake effect band later Thursday. Blowing and drifting snow will make travel very difficult at times, especially on secondary roads and higher elevations where plows may struggle to keep up.

Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible and prepare for sudden drops in visibility if driving becomes unavoidable. Extra time should be allowed for any trips, and motorists are advised to slow down and avoid sudden braking. The snow band is expected to linger through Friday afternoon before shifting south, though hazardous conditions may persist until the warning expires. Additional updates may be issued as the event evolves.
