Roanoke, Virginia – A major winter storm could bring heavy snow and sleet across the southern Appalachians and nearby foothills beginning Saturday morning, with dangerous travel conditions expected to last through Monday afternoon. Accumulating snow may make roads impassable in some areas, raising concerns for the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for large portions of southwest and central Virginia, northwest North Carolina, and southeast West Virginia. Snow and sleet accumulations between 8 and 14 inches are possible, particularly across higher elevations and along the Blue Ridge.
Communities including Roanoke, Blacksburg, Salem, Lynchburg, Wytheville, Galax, Martinsville, Danville, Boone, and West Jefferson are within the watch area. Travel along I-81, I-77, U.S. 221, and mountain roadways could become very difficult to impossible as snowfall intensifies and visibility drops. Rural routes and mountain passes are expected to be among the first to become hazardous.
Emergency officials urge residents to complete preparations early, delay non-essential travel, and be ready for prolonged winter conditions. Those who must travel should carry winter survival kits and dress in layers to reduce the risk of frostbite or hypothermia.
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. Additional advisories or warnings are likely as confidence increases in snowfall totals and the storm’s regional impacts.
