Boston, Massachusetts – A brutal Arctic pattern is settling over Massachusetts and is expected to keep the state locked in dangerous cold well into February, raising concerns about subzero temperatures, icy travel, and prolonged strain on heating systems. Overnight lows this weekend are forecast to plunge well below zero across much of the interior, with Boston dropping into the single digits and colder air spilling south into the region.
According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, long-range outlooks from late January through mid-February strongly favor much below normal temperatures across New England. This same Arctic air mass is driving extreme cold across the Midwest and Northeast, with subzero readings stretching deep into the eastern U.S. throughout the period.
For Massachusetts, the cold sets the stage for periodic snow and ice threats, especially this weekend as wintry precipitation develops farther south and brushes parts of southern New England. Slick conditions are possible on I-90, I-93, Route 128, and untreated local roads, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Prolonged freezing conditions also increase the risk of frozen pipes and power disruptions.
As for relief, signals point to only brief moderation at times, with no sustained warm-up likely before mid-February. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, prepare homes for extended cold, and stay alert for additional advisories as this long-duration Arctic outbreak continues.
