Virginia — Cold pavement glistens under early sunlight across Hampton Roads this morning as temperatures hover near freezing. Moisture from light snow and damp roads has turned slick in spots, especially on bridges and neighborhood streets. MLK Day begins quietly, but winter hazards remain close at hand.

According to the National Weather Service, a Special Weather Statement highlights the risk of black ice across eastern Virginia, including Virginia Beach and surrounding coastal communities. Temperatures dipped below freezing early, allowing wet roads to refreeze. Impacts are most likely on untreated surfaces, secondary roads, and shaded areas through mid-morning.

Snowfall has been limited, generally under an inch, and accumulations remain confined mainly to grassy areas. Even so, slick conditions can catch drivers off guard. Officials urge slower speeds and extra stopping distance, particularly during early errands and holiday travel.

Sunshine helps conditions improve later today. Highs climb into the mid-40s this afternoon with light southwest winds. That warmth allows lingering ice to melt, offering temporary relief. Tonight turns mostly clear, with lows near the upper 20s. Another round of patchy refreezing is possible late tonight into early Tuesday.

Tuesday stays cool but calm, with highs near the upper 30s. A noticeable change arrives midweek. By Wednesday, temperatures rebound into the upper 40s, and clouds increase. A slight chance of rain develops Wednesday night into Thursday, signaling a shift away from dry winter air.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook suggests near to slightly above-normal precipitation chances across the Mid-Atlantic, while colder air lingers to the north. For coastal Virginia, winter hazards ease but do not disappear entirely.

Slow down early today and watch footing on sidewalks. Conditions can improve quickly, but slick spots linger longer than expected.
