Chicago, Illinois – Multiple rounds of snow are expected across the Chicago area today, creating hazardous travel conditions during both the morning and evening commutes, according to the National Weather Service.
A band of snow moved through the region this morning, producing up to 0.5 inches of accumulation, with the highest amounts north of I-80. The snow resulted in slick roads, reduced visibility, and a slowed morning commute across the metro area. This morning’s snow was expected to last 2 to 4 hours, tapering by late morning.
Forecasters warned that additional impacts are likely later today. From mid-afternoon through early evening (roughly 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.), scattered gusty snow showers may develop. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, and where showers intensify, localized coatings up to 0.5 inches are possible. Sudden drops in visibility may occur, even in areas that saw little snow earlier.
The National Weather Service emphasized that snow coverage will be uneven, but any snow shower could quickly make roads slick, especially during the evening commute.
Looking ahead, much colder air is expected to settle into the region through the weekend and into early next week. High temperatures will fall into the upper teens to low 20s, with morning wind chills between −10° and −20° possible Sunday night through Tuesday.
Drivers are urged to check road conditions before traveling, slow down during snow showers, and allow extra following distance.
