South Bend, Indiana – A colder-than-normal weather pattern expected to settle across northern Indiana between Tuesday and Saturday is raising concern for snow and potential travel disruptions, particularly in areas influenced by Lake Michigan. The developing setup favors sustained cold, increasing the likelihood that any systems moving through — combined with lake-effect processes — could produce accumulating snow.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, northern Indiana is favored for below-normal temperatures during the January 20–24 window, while precipitation probabilities trend above normal at 40–50%. With cold air firmly entrenched, precipitation is more likely to fall as snow, and lake-enhanced snowfall could intensify impacts across the region.

In South Bend and surrounding communities, daytime temperatures are expected to remain suppressed, with overnight lows well below freezing. That environment supports efficient snow accumulation and lingering icy conditions on roadways. Areas closer to Lake Michigan, including LaPorte, St. Joseph, and Elkhart counties, face a higher risk for heavier snowfall if persistent northwest flow develops over the lake.

Major travel corridors such as the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90), U.S. 31, and State Road 2 could become slick during snow periods, especially overnight and during early morning travel. Cold pavement temperatures may allow snow and ice to persist between events, compounding travel hazards. Prolonged cold may also increase energy demand and strain home heating systems.

Residents are urged to prepare ahead of the Jan 20–24 period by checking heating equipment, insulating exposed pipes, and ensuring vehicles are stocked with winter emergency supplies. Those in lake-effect prone areas should be ready for rapidly changing conditions and localized heavy snow.

This cold-driven pattern is expected to persist through late week, and confidence may increase that at least one impactful snow event could affect northern Indiana. Additional winter weather advisories or alerts may be issued as conditions come into sharper focus.
