Northern Lower Michigan – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across portions of northern Lower Michigan as lake-effect snow and gusty winds create hazardous travel conditions through early Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.

The advisory includes Alpena and Presque Isle counties until 1 a.m. EST Thursday, where additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected. Wind gusts up to 30 mph may cause blowing and drifting snow, particularly on exposed roadways, impacting the evening commute.

Farther west, the advisory continues until 7 a.m. EST Thursday for Leelanau, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Manistee, and Wexford counties. Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible under persistent lake-effect bands. Winds gusting up to 35 mph could result in near-whiteout conditions at times, especially overnight.

The National Weather Service warned that road conditions may change rapidly, with sharp variations in snowfall and visibility occurring over short distances due to narrow lake-effect snow bands. Bridges, rural highways, and north–south oriented roads are especially vulnerable to slick spots and drifting.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution, particularly during evening and overnight travel. Conditions may briefly improve between snow bands but can deteriorate quickly.

Travel impacts may be most noticeable for evening commuters, overnight workers, and early-morning drivers heading out before daybreak Thursday. Motorists should continue to monitor local forecasts and road conditions as lake-effect snow persists.
