Syracuse, New York – Drivers across Central New York should prepare for worsening road conditions tonight as rain changes to snow and colder air locks in, creating a prolonged period of hazardous travel that could last into Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect beginning Wednesday evening and continuing through Friday afternoon for Onondaga, Madison, Northern Oneida, Southern Oneida, and Southern Cayuga counties. Snow totals are expected to range from 4 to 8 inches, with periods of heavier snowfall possible overnight and again Thursday night.
In Syracuse and surrounding communities including Auburn, Oneida, Rome, Utica, and Hamilton, rain will transition to snow this evening as temperatures drop below freezing. Wet roads may quickly become icy, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges, and secondary roads. Both the Thursday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted.
The initial round of snow is expected to taper Thursday afternoon, but lake effect snow is forecast to redevelop Thursday evening and persist into Friday, adding additional accumulation and reducing visibility at times. Travel could become very difficult during heavier bursts.
Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall. Drivers can check current road conditions by dialing 511. Additional advisories or extensions remain possible as lake effect snow continues through Friday afternoon.
