Denver, Colorado – Strong and potentially damaging winds are expected to develop across the Denver metro and northeastern Colorado late Thursday night into Friday afternoon, prompting a High Wind Watch and raising concerns for fire danger, power outages, and hazardous travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, northwest winds will increase late Thursday night and remain strong through Friday afternoon. Sustained winds of 35 to 45 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph, especially across the plains and exposed areas northeast of Denver.

These winds will significantly elevate fire weather conditions from late Thursday morning through early Friday evening. Any new fires that start could spread rapidly, particularly in dry grassland areas. Officials warn that outdoor burning and activities that could spark fires should be avoided during this period.

The strong winds may also lead to scattered power outages as tree limbs and power lines are stressed. Unsecured outdoor objects such as trash bins, patio furniture, and construction materials could be blown around, creating additional hazards. High-profile vehicles may have difficulty traveling on east–west routes, including Interstate 76, Interstate 70 east of Denver, and rural highways across the northeastern plains.

While no precipitation is expected, the lack of moisture combined with wind will heighten the overall impact. Conditions may deteriorate quickly late Thursday night as winds strengthen, with the most widespread impacts expected during the day Friday.

Residents are urged to prepare now by securing loose items, avoiding fire-starting activities, and planning for possible travel disruptions. Utility customers should be ready for brief outages, and drivers should use extra caution in open and elevated areas.

The High Wind Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon, and it may be upgraded as confidence increases. Additional statements or warnings are expected as the event draws closer and wind strength is refined.
