Maine greets the day under low clouds and a raw chill, with snowflakes drifting through muted gray light. Tires hiss on damp pavement, but that sound won’t last long. Winter tightens its grip across northern Maine as snow chances increase and colder air pours in.

According to the National Weather Service, periods of snow develop today and continue into Thursday. Rain may briefly mix in at times, but colder air quickly wins out. Patchy fog reduces visibility this morning, especially along Route 1 and Route 161. Snow becomes steadier by Thursday, with up to one to two inches possible around Caribou and nearby communities.

Temperatures hover near freezing today, then drop sharply after sunset. By Thursday night, lows fall near 10 degrees as winds increase. Blowing snow may reduce visibility, especially in open areas and along north-south roadways. Drivers should expect slick conditions as wet surfaces freeze quickly.

Friday turns colder and unsettled. Light snow showers linger, followed by clearing skies. Highs struggle to reach the mid-teens, while wind chills dip well below zero at times. Any untreated roads remain icy, making travel hazardous through the day.

Friday night brings a deeper freeze. Temperatures sink near 7 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The cold eases slightly Saturday, though it stays firmly wintry. Highs rebound near 28 with partial sunshine. Another chance of snow returns Saturday night into Sunday, reinforcing the active winter pattern.

Looking ahead to the Jan 19–23 window, NOAA outlooks suggest near-normal precipitation but continued cold across Maine. Snow chances remain frequent, and winter travel impacts are likely to continue.
