New York wakes to damp streets, gray skies, and a chill that feels sharper than yesterday. The air smells wet and metallic, and winter is clearly repositioning itself. Conditions change fast across the Capital Region as rain gives way to snow and colder air presses in.

Rain develops through the day with temperatures holding in the mid-40s. As colder air pushes south this evening, precipitation transitions to snow across Albany, Troy, and Rensselaer County. Snow may mix with rain at first, but confidence is growing in a brief period of accumulating snow late tonight into Thursday morning.

Temperatures slide quickly after sunset. Overnight lows dip near 27 degrees, allowing wet pavement to refreeze. That sets the stage for black ice on bridges, ramps, and untreated roads. Drivers heading out early Thursday should slow down and allow extra time.

Thursday stays mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers possible. Any accumulation looks light, but even a dusting can cause trouble during the morning commute. Winds increase from the west, making it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. By Thursday night, skies partially clear and temperatures drop into the mid-teens.

Friday offers sunshine but little warmth. Highs struggle to reach the upper 20s, reinforcing the winter grip across eastern New York. Frost remains a concern for exposed pipes and unprotected plants.

Saturday brings a brief break with highs near 38, but another chance of snow arrives late in the weekend. Sunday stays cold, with highs near 30 and lingering winter conditions.

Looking ahead to Jan 19–23, NOAA outlooks suggest colder-than-normal temperatures persist across the Northeast, while precipitation trends lean near normal. Winter is far from finished.
